GRADES 1-9 APPLICATIONS

General Rules

  • Children applying to first grade must be six years old by August 31 of the year they are to begin first grade.
  • Applications for grades 1-9 for the school year 2011-2012 will be received beginning November 2010 and then reviewed in January 2011. Applications for the current school year may be obtained at any time.
  • Applicants for grade two through nine are usually placed with children of their own age, although each child is evaluated before final determination is made.
  • Applicants for grades one through nine will be evaluated for proficiency in English and grade-level math to ensure the child's success at Nishimachi.
  • Please note that the admission procedures provide a professional assessment which determines student readiness for Nishimachi. Applicants, including Nishimachi community members, are not automatically accepted. We expect that all applicants and community members respect our final decision and understand that a dual-language education is not appropriate for every student.
  • All students at Nishimachi study Japanese, either as a first or second language, 45-60 minutes a day First-language students typically are children who have at least one Japanese parent and have lived in Japan since birth. Each child will be evaluated to see if sufficient proficiency in Japanese exists to meet the demands of the program. Note that children who have attended a Japanese kindergarten (nursery school or elementary school) are not automatically assigned to a first-language class.

To apply, please submit the following documents and materials to the Director of Admission:

  • Application form for admission;
  • Report cards for the last two years of study;
  • Any recent standardized test results;
  • Confidential Student References Form filled by current and past year ‘s homeroom teachers for grade 1-9 applicants;
  • Copy of applicant’s birth certificate;
  • A family photograph;
  • Non-refundable application fee of 20,000 yen (The stamped receipt portion of the bank payment form, or a check of US$200 made payable to Nishimachi International School).

If space is available, parents of prospective candidates will be contacted by the Admissions Director for an appointment to screen the child for:

  1. Proficiency in mathematics, English language and, as appropriate, Japanese;
  2. Ability to support the learning of both English and Japanese;
