Fifth Annual Nishimachi Outreach Scholarship Golf Tournament (The Internationalist Vol. 42, Fall 2008)

| The 2008 Outreach Scholarship Golf Tournament was held on Saturday, May 17, under clear skies, for the fifth consecutive year, at the beautiful Maple Point Golf Club in Yamanashi Prefecture. Thirty-eight golfers, including sixteen parents, six Nishimachi-Kai members, and four members of the Nishimachi staff, participated in a day of golfing fun. All four past tournament winners were present, each aiming for his second win. Although the biggest draw of the day was Alex Nakao, who took the trophy last year with a five-under par, everyone's interest went to third grader Kengo Aoshima. The winnerfs trophy in the end went to Masami Akeshita, Kengo's grandfather, who shot an under-par 71, followed in close second by 2007 winner, Alex (73), and 2006 winner, Felix Pang (88), in third. Winner of the 2005 tournament, Tadashi Ogata (86), came in fifth and 2004 winner, Gensuke Tokoro (93), in seventh. Kengo shot an 80, but came in eleventh with the double-peria rules, followed, surprisingly but not surprisingly, by our athletic director, Eugene Bogun, in twelfth. Many thanks go to the participants, the helpers, and the tournament sponsors, who made the day a great success- 504,000 yen, or one quarter of a year's tuition was raised in support of the Outreach Scholarship Fund. Every participant received a prize or two donated by the generous sponsors listed on this page. We even held a raffle drawing. We hope to see many more of you at our sixth tournament, scheduled for Saturday, May 23, 2009, at the Maple Point Golf Club. | ![]() ![]() |
