Readiness for Nishimachi Education

  • Grade placement is determined by the Nishimachi Admissions Committee.
  • All applicants for Grades 1-9 must have grade-level English in reading, writing, speaking and comprehension as there is no ESL program at Nishimachi.
  • Selected applicants for Grades 1-9 are screened to determine readiness for Nishimachi’s program, and are required to have grade level proficiency in English and Mathematics.
  • All students at Nishimachi must study Japanese, either as a first or additional language. Japanese classes are structured according to students' Japanese language proficiency as determined by Nishimachi. Prior attendance at a Japanese school does not guarantee placement in a Japanese first language class at Nishimachi.

Screening Process

  • All applicants from Grades K-9 must be screened to assess and determine their readiness for Nishimachi’s program.
  • All applicants for Kindergarten, Gr. 1-2 must be screened in-person at Nishimachi.
  • Parents' interview is arranged for all applicants who come for screening.

Admissions Decisions

  • Applications are not prioritized by the date on which they are received. After the application documents are reviewed by the Admissions Committee, the Admissions Office contacts parents to inform them of the next stages in the admissions process.
  • Please note that the admissions procedures provide a professional assessment which determines student readiness for Nishimachi. Applicants, including Nishimachi community members, are not automatically accepted. We expect that all applicants and community members respect our final decision and understand that an education in two languages, English and Japanese, is not appropriate for every student.
