SUMMER PROGRAMS

Nishimachi International School offers three distinct summer programs only for Nishimachi students during two weeks in June. Attendance at the summer school is optional.

Pre-K & K Summer School

The goal of this program is to focus on helping students make a smooth transition from this year to the next academic year, which is quite different for both the incoming kindergarten students and the current kindergarten students. Students will experience a Japanese and English two-way immersion program, which will provide an opportunity to further develop socially, to learn the routines and to feel confident for the upcoming school year. Students will also have opportunities to develop friendships and become oriented to their new physical environment. In addition they will experience and enjoy art, music, sports and other interactive learning activities.

Japanese F/JNN Summer School (Grades 1 to 8)

The main objective of the F and JNN summer school programs is to review and enhance the Monkasho Kokugo curriculum. Students will further develop their Japanese listening, speaking, reading, writing, and linguistic skills not only in Japanese classes but also in science, social studies, calligraphy, sports and fine arts.

Japanese S Summer School (Grades 1 to 8)

The primary objective of the S summer school program is to enhance and extend the work established in the Nishimachi S program. Lessons will place students in an environment, where they will use Japanese language to communicate through experiencing listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Students will have opportunities to research using books and information technology, produce creative work and be involved in group projects. Students will also extend their Japanese language skills and in so doing, become better communicators through simulations, role-plays, games and cultural experiences such as calligraphy, Japanese cooking, and Japanese music.

The Kazuno Experience

As an option during one of the two summer school weeks, students in grades 4 to 8 can opt to join the Kazuno Experience. Students can share and broaden their understanding and use of Japanese by interacting among themselves and with students from our sister school in Kurohone and the surrounding community. Students will also participate in a variety of exciting outdoor activities, which may include white water rafting, canyoning, hiking, orienteering and fishing. In addition, students will enjoy a variety of Japanese cultural activities, which may include a ride on the local scenic railway, a trip to a textile museum, an onsen visit or a tour of the Ashio copper mine.
