Founded in 1949, Nishimachi International School is an independent, coeducational Kindergarten through Grade 9 school in central Tokyo with an internationally well-known academic reputation based on our unique history, English-Japanese language programs, and multicultural approaches to learning.

Hello and welcome to Nishimachi. Tané Matsukata founded the school in 1949, and her legacy continues today within our strong academic, activity-based learning program.

Nishimachi’s small size offers the intimacy, safety, and opportunity to grow that most big schools don’t. It has a warm, caring atmosphere. The children take turns in leadership roles, learning from and supporting each other.

We lived in Japan from 2008-2012 with preschool children and upon our return to Tokyo in 2017 with 3 children ages 12, 10 and 9, we chose NIS as it is a truly ‘Japanese International School’ and as such provides considerable emphasis on Japanese culture and language.
