Yashiro Media Center (Library)
The Yashiro Media Center, Nishimachi Library’s mission is to promote literacy and the effective use of ideas and information for students, parents and staff. The library features a wide array of resources available for checkout in both English and Japanese, including print books, audio books, DVDs, periodicals and ebooks. Divided over three floors, the library is an attractive and inviting place that seeks to cultivate students’ love of reading as well as providing the guidance needed to help students become responsible users of information in the twenty-first century.
The Nishimachi library contains over 17,000 items available for borrowing. Approximately two-thirds of the collection is in English and a third of the resources are in Japanese. The top floor of the Nishimachi library houses our middle school collection, and the bottom floor is home to our elementary books and resources. On our middle floor, patrons are greeted by one of our two professional librarians and can find periodicals, audio visual materials, and some of our most popular book series. The middle floor also often features cultural exhibits related to Japanese and Nishimachi holidays and special events.
All members of the Nishimachi community, including students from Kindergarten–Grade 9 as well as all parents, are welcome to visit the library and borrow materials. The library is open during school hours for student use, and open to parents and students after school from 3:30-4:30 p.m. All patrons are welcome to access the electronic card catalog, and once logged in, can browse our physical collection and access a selection of online subscription resources including Tumblebooks, Big Universe, Brain Pop, Brain Pop Jr., Britannica Online as well as many eBooks and audiobooks that can be accessed using your computer, tablet or smartphone.
