World Teachers' Day
Last Wednesday was the United Nations' (UN) World Teachers' Day. World Teachers' Day is celebrated every year on October 5.
World Teachers' Day celebrates the role teachers play in providing quality education at all levels. This enables children and adults of all ages to learn to take part in and contribute to their local community and global society.
All over the world, a quality education offers hope and the promise of a better standard of living. However, there can be no quality education without competent and motivated teachers.
Good teachers and good teaching is one of the factors that keeps children in school and influences learning. Teachers help students to think critically, turn information into knowledge, work cooperatively, tackle problems and make informed choices.
Teaching is one of the most honourable and challenging of professions. Teachers play a vital role in giving young people the skills and confidence to achieve their best in life. Most of us as adults can point to teachers in our past who have made a difference in our own lives.
This year's theme, for World teachers' Day is "Valuing Teachers, Improving their Status", The UN's Education 2030 Framework for Action, highlights the fact that teachers are fundamental for equitable and quality education and, as such, must be "adequately trained, recruited and remunerated, motivated and supported within well-resourced, efficient and effectively governed systems".
World Teachers' Day provides the perfect opportunity for us to pay tribute to the teachers here at NIS. I urge all parents and students to show their appreciation whenever they can for the ongoing contribution, hard work and high commitment of the teachers at this school.
